26th December 2010
Over the past 64 years, the Rolex Sydney Hobart has become an icon of Australia’s summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Davis Cup tennis and the cricket tests between Australia and England. No yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage – except, of course, the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race – than does the start on Sydney Harbour. And the others only happen every four or five years.
SOS Ocean Racing will be present on the start line of this years race in a new boat. We are currently negotiating with current owners of several large and famous racing yachts and we hope to have a vessel in the 60-100ft range for our campaign. No matter what we will have a vessel that will be on the main start line with the maxi yachts on that epic day of sailing, the start of the Sydney to Hobart on Boxing Day.
In 2008 I competed in my first and only Sydney to Hobart aboard Lloyd's Brokers Too Impetuous winning PHS Divsion 2.
Our crew will consist of between 16-22 and we are inviting you to join us in this epic event. In order to join us you need to bring to the campaign a minimum of $10,000 in sponsorship. You can raise the funds any way you like. You can find businesses, raise funds at your Yacht Club, business or school or fund it yourself. Contact us for what we can do for your sponsor.
All you need to do to join this program is contact us with your sailing resume. This is a high tech vessel and we want to ensure we have a good crew however half of the crew need to have certain qualifications in order to qualify for the race. We will ensure we qualify for the race requirement of having half of the crew having completed a Cat 1 race or equivalent by completing a qualifying leg prior to the start.
We will also need to know who your sponsors are as there are strict sponsorship regulations in this race.
We will be pushing the Save Our Seas Australia organisations message in this race and additional funds will go towards the work they do in creating awareness of the damage plastic bags do to our environment, promoting awareness and taking action by organising clean up days and teaching our next generation.
